Squad Ends
Season 7-3
The 1982 Tyger Football
squad finished the season with
a 7-3 record, the best since
1976. They also got off to their
best start in years with victories
over Cleveland East Tech (48-
13), Columbus Linden McKinley
(21-6), and Malabar (21-7).
The win over Malabar was
very gratifying for Coach Dean
since it was for the city cham-
pionship and to avenge last
years heartbreaking loss.
The fourth game of the
season saw the Tygers fall to
Madison (14-17) on a last sec
ond field goal. They re |
bounded the next week with a
win over Lexington (25-0).
The most disappointing
game was a (0-34) homecom-
ing defeat from Cleveland
Benedictine. The Tygers
showed their class with big wins
over Lorain Southview (41-6)
and Wooster Triway (39-13),
before being out talented by
state power Massillon (14-39).
The Tygers scored more points
against Massillon this year than
did any other team.
The Tygers concluded the
season by sending the seniors
out winners with a (21-0) win
over Ashland.
Tyger award winners were
Vernon Hairston, Jimo Adams,
defensive lineman, and cap-
tains award; Craig Leedom, of-
fensive back; Ed Stevens, offen-
sive lineman; Terrence Witcher,
defensive back; Orlando
Tackett, coaches award; Paul

of its season, ‘Up the Down
Staircase,"’ on May 13-14, in
the Senior High auditorium.
The play was directed by
William Asher. “Up the

new dimension to theatrics
at MSH by incorporating the

Barrett, performed by Kathy
Davis, befriends two
teachers, Paul Barringer
played by Eric Bullock and
Bea Scrachter performed by
Maureena Vollmer. She also
has many confrontations
with a hard nosed vice-
principal, J. J. McHabe
played by Sean Ragsdale,
and tries to help Joe Fer-
rone, a student played by
Pat Vulgamore.

Remember
When
In the future anyone who
happens to read this will
remember the 1982-83
school year as being one
where kids hung out
together, went fo parties,
and had a good time. But
this is just only scratching the
surface.
Pizza Hut and Park Lanes
still were the popular
hangouts, with the addition
of Diamond Jims, after foot-
ball and basketball games.
Also as the school year
wore on, the number of kids
who carried portable tape
players, commonly known
os *“boxes’" anid
“walkmans’’ grew. This
prompted Mr. Morvai to
begin and enforce a tough
new rule banning
“walkmans’ from _ school
altogether and giving the
Owners of the ‘boxes’ the
right to play them only dur-
ing lunch in the cafeteria and
in the gym.
Preppie clothing was still
popular for both males and
females. Both sexes wore
polo shirts, and pin striped
pants. For the boys there
were thin ties, wing tip shirts,
and cuffed pants. For the
girls there were mini _ skirts,
colored hose, low heels,
bold jewelry, and short hair.

Seniors Have
‘A Night to
Remember’
The Class of '83 held its senior
prom at Mohican Lodge on
Wednesday, June 1. A buffet
dinner featuring roast beef,
chicken, and ham was served
to the partygoers, followed by
dancing with DJ Sam Avellone.
During the evening seniors
voted for their choice for prom
king and queen; DeeJaye Mehl
and Don Knapp were selected.
Following the formal dance,
most of the seniors and their
dates changed clothes and
then gathered at Cinema
World, where they saw either
“Flashdance’’ or ‘‘Blue
Thunder.’’ The night was top-
ped off with bowling and
billiards at Park Lanes.
For the Class of ‘83 this was
truly *’A Night to Remember.”’

We dedicate...
... the 1983 Manhigan to Mrs. Ann Gerrell, who
spent twenty-four years teaching Spanish and
German to the students of both Mansfield Senior
High and Malabar. Born in Salem, Ohio, in 1936,
she went on to earn her degree from the Col-
lege of Wooster before beginning her teaching
career. She was married to Ray Gerrell, an
English, speech, and drama teacher at Malabar,
and was a member of the First United
Presbyterian Church and a camping club. She
had served as a class advisor and as a foreign
language club advisor at various times during
her career.
Ann Gerrell always had a friendly word and a
happy smile for the people she worked with and
gave unselfishly of herself to her students. Her
courage and determination are an inspiration to
all those whose lives she touched.
And More Thanks. . .
During the course of the year there are many
people who help in some way with the produc-
tion of our book, and we would like to recognize
them here.
Ken Murray, who designed the cover and divi-
sion page artwork used in the book.
Bob Hrivnak of Buell-Kraft Studio, who took
group shots and pictures of special events, and
provided film and the use of his facilities for our
student photographers.
Mark Bohland of Maranatha Photography,
who provided team pictures.
Tom Kiess and Bob Hastings of Taylor
Publishing Company, who offered their expert
help and advice.
Ron Morvai, who helped work out financing to
meet the cost of the book.
Sally Schrader, who spent many hours after
graduation typing the remainder of the copy for
the book.
